Advantages
When mucking out there is
no bed to sort through - it only
takes two minutes to sweep
out
droppings. Eliminates the
hassle
of looking for and
storing bedding.
As the waste
product is pure horse
dung, it
is easier to get rid of to
gardeners. Although it is
expensive
to buy initially, it
does work out
very economical
in the long run.
The mats are too heavy and
tough
for my horse to dig up
or damage
the surface of, but
they 'give' as he
walks over
them or lies down so he no
longer runs the risk of getting
bumps and scrapes.
| Disadvantages The initial outlay may be beyond the budget of the average horse-owner. Initially the mats have a slight waxy film on them which takes a few days to wear off. This means that it is a couple of days before they start to drain properly but that's a minor initial inconvenience. Occasionally (not more than once or twice a year) the mats should be lifted, disinfected underneath and fresh Deodoriser put down. Although a heavy, messy job this should not be as bad as digging out a deep litter bed! |
saves time...
| Conclusion I did work out a yearly cost of other beddings to compare to Stableite's initial cost. Straw at 70p per bale and five bales a week used would cost £182. Shavings at £4.40 per bale and two bales a week worked out at £468. This cost comparison depends on how economical you are with bedding, how clean your horse is, local availablity and prices. It doesn't take into account the value one could put on storage space and disposal, nor the time-shaving advantages! I've never used rubber flooring before, but after trying out this product would love to have the rest of my stables kitted out with it as I'm now a total convert! |
